It has been about a week since the Tom Robinson case and things in Maycomb have returned to their normal pace. The town has pretty much all forgot about Tom in prison awaiting an appeal. With school starting in a couple of days I have to get ready so that is all that can be said, but hopefully in the future folks won't be judged by the color of their skin or the area of their upbringing. As for now, all is peaceful in Maycomb.

Guilty!?
I can't believe what the jury decided! Tom had all the evidence and the Ewells had none but a' "white man's word." The jury all voted guilty just because Tom was black! Atticus said we had a good chance but I guess people in Maycomb just can't get along with each other. Whether they are simple country boys, ignorant people in poverty, or folks with different colored skins, we all should look beyond each others backgrounds, so we can all live in peace where people are treated equally. Only if the world were more like sports, base a man on his accomplishments and not of his background.
So Far So Good
Atticus led an amazing defense of Tom Robinson today in the court house. He wrecked the reputation and credibility of the Ewells by questioning them to the extent of making their embarrassing home life known. Scout, Dill, and I were sitting on the, "colored folks balcony," with the Reverend of, "First Purchase."( The black church) Atticus was pointing out many factors that did not add up, his quick thinking exposed that Tom could not have beat up the right side of Mayella Ewell because his left hand was crippled. Tom also told a story of how Mayella tried to seduce him and that he did not rape her. The Ewell defense was poorly stated and I think we have a good chance of winning. The jury has yet to vote and after dinner, we are going back to see the verdict.
Bad News
Today Atticus received news that he was being appointed as the defensive lawyer of the Tom Robinson case. Atticus says he will try his best to defend him but their is not much hope. I asked him why their wasn't much hope and he told me that he is being accused of raping a white women. Tom was going to be put on trial and be judged by a jury of white men. Atticus is afraid they won't look at the facts but look at the fact that he is a black man that could have possibly hurt a white women. I used to think there was only one type of folks, but then why can't we all get along? Now at school kids are going to judge us just like the lack of schooling with the Ewells and the country ignorance of the Cunninghams.
Dill Comes Home!
Just when I was enjoying the sports section in my room, Scout has to come and bother me. She starts asking weird questions about snakes and then tells me she stepped on one. Of course its my job to get it out. When we swiped under her bed with the broom, out comes the dirtiest looking creature I have ever seen! It was Dill. I did not expect to see Dill this summer, but here he is! Scout looks beyond the initial consequences, I like Dill and all, but he is not worth getting in trouble. I called Atticus to straighten things out so we did not get in trouble for Dill's mistakes. Atticus was very confused that Dill ran away from home to Maycomb, but decides to let Dill stay after a few calls to his home. Aunt Alexandra couldn't believe Atticus let Dill stay. When she looks at Dill, it is almost like she doesn't see him, she sees an unstable family from which he comes. That is why I love football, people are judged by their abilities not by where they come from.

Dill is Nowhere to Be Seen!
Scout was pestering me again about a letter she got that Dill wasn't coming home for the summer but I didn't really listen, I am more interested in what is actually important in the real world. At Finch's Landing, Francis told me that Dill had no real family and was just passed around to cousins all year round. Scout and I didn't care or believe him, but maybe he finally got a family and is settling down. All the other Finches really don't like Dill because of his background. Why does that matter so much to them?
